Melbourne to host Super Round as full rugby draw revealed

Melbourne’s AAMI Park will host all 12 teams in six matches across three days to help kick-start the Super Rugby Pacific competition.

“Super Round” will operate like the NRL’s Magic Round, giving rugby fans the chance to watch all 12 teams at one ground over 72 hours in the second week of the season next year.

SANZAAR revealed the full draw for the new, 12-team competition on Monday. It will begin on Friday, February 18, when one of two new franchises - Moana Pasifika - host the Brumbies at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium.

The Waratahs will also begin their campaign under new coach Darren Coleman on February 18. Coleman’s side will host the Hurricanes.

The return to a regular Super Rugby structure also means less Australian derbies.

The two best Australian teams - the Reds and Brumbies - will meet in round four at Suncorp Stadium, and in round 11 at GIO Stadium.

The Waratahs face the Reds twice, at Suncorp Stadium in round seven and at home in round 13, but the venue is yet to be confirmed.

Coleman’s side will play its other rivalry match against the Brumbies in round three at GIO Stadium.

The 18-week competition will feature 14 matches in 15 weeks of regular-season action before three consecutive weekends of finals.

The finals will feature eight teams in a straight knockout format. The team that finishes first will play eighth, second will play seventh and so on.

Each team will have one bye, between rounds seven and nine.

There will also be four themed rounds - Women in Rugby round (round three), Culture (round six), ANZAC (round 10) and Heritage (round 12).
